WHAT PROPELS US !
Having worked for and lectured at both public and private chartered universities for over fifteen years and witnessed the dilemma and challenges which young people endure when choosing careers and in relationships, Dr. Alenga developed a deep passion for career guidance and counseling young people. In my own Career path and personal development, he experienced many crucial challenges and for which he did not have the luxury of mentors, coaches and counselors.
Personal development planning was unheard of and career guidance was pure gambling with no sense of direction. Some were guided by peer pressure; others chose what dad or mum commanded them to take. When at college or at the university, some were guided by the “fullness” of the lecture halls! So if you found yourself in a lecture hall with only a handful of students, whereas there was another lecture hall, buzzing with “full-life”, we opted for the “full-life” lecture hall experience. Those whose parents were more “exposed” to the world and knew the better paying careers, were guided by “how well” careers pay.
Even in a technologically advanced world, when we are in the “information era”, things are not any better. When students report at the university or any other college, and seek for career guidance, they are usually given a “careers handbook” to guide them.
But even after going through “all the courses on offer” in the “careers handbook”, they are still left lost as to which career is most suitable for them. Since they are presumed intelligent on joining college or university, such students do not want to appear lost! They therefore do the most logical thing an intelligent person of their caliber would do. Make an “intelligent guess” and hope for the best! Those who make the right guess, succeed. Those who make wrong guesses suffer for the rest of their lives. But should such important decisions such as choosing your right career be left to guess work?
As Dr. Alenga pondered over such weighty matters, he got an opportunity to register for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree programme at Moi University, main campus at chepkoilel. Since he was a certified Public Secretary of Kenya CPS(K) , having studied management and company secretarial duties and studied Business Administration at both undergraduate and master's level, he thought entrepreneurship would spice up his career. However, he had been in business for some time, and had experienced enough problems which left me wondering if really entrepreneurship was his “cup of tea”! Immediately on completion of this programme, he registered for my Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree programme in entrepreneurship at Kenyatta University.
In his “well considered opinion”, he was done! Dr. Alenga had been confirmed to be an entrepreneur for the rest of my life! Fate had connived to make him an entrepreneur or so he thought! Little did he know that it was this same programme which was going to revolutionize his career and life. It was during his (PhD) research programme that he stumbled on the greatest truth that would change his career focus and life!
As Dr. Alenga profiled successful entrepreneurs, he was to learn that human behavior is determined, to a greater, extent, by human nature (or temperament). According to Tim Lahaye, (in his book “why you act the way you do”), there is no other factor with such profound influence on human life more than temperament.
As Dr. Alenga wondered what he would do for humanity that would have such profound impact on human life, he settled for a professional Career Advisory Centre ! So that he can impact the lives of children, parents, teenagers, and the youths. Dr. Alenga's vision is to impact the lives of desperate village girls and boys in the remotest part of this country, and beyond. Every desperate girl and boy in the remotest part of this country and beyond to understand that they are valuable and not useless. Their value is not in what they own but in their “full potential”.
It is only when young people understand who they are, that
they can live a more fulfilling life. With the current breakdown of the African
extended family, the modern parents are at the proverbial cross roads! They are
physically removed from the customary initiation rites practiced in their rural
areas while their children, more than ever before, desperately need life
lessons on how to enter teenage, puberty and adulthood.
While at school, they, desperately need the helping hands of their parents as they learn and revise, but their parents are physically removed from the homes by the search for more money. On completion of their studies at school, college or university, these young people have no “practical” experience on either office work or entrepreneurship. The major critical issues facing parents today include: principles to responsible teenage, puberty and adulthood, academic excellence for their children, choosing the right career, right relationships and jobs for their children. The ultimate aim of career and youths Advisory Centre is to address all these critical issues.
